6-week session begins April 14!

This spring I will be offering a class dedicated to developing acrobatic ability. No experience is necessary, only the desire to explore and develop your potential for free movement. Individuals taking this class should be able to follow directions, have patience with themselves, and "listen" to their bodies so that injury can be avoided. Acrobatic movement takes time and consistency to develop. Your body must be prepared to withstand the unusual forces generated from handstands, jumps and flips. This class is designed for just that. It is a must for people involved in high-impact, extreme activities like martial arts, break-dancing, parkour/free-running, acrobatic dance and gymnastics. Regular acrobatic conditioning works to enhance your basic agility, which can increase your performance in many other kinds of activities as well. It can reduce the risk of injuries from falls and similar accidents. Additionally, each class is an amazing workout in itself.

In this session we will focus on 3 crucial areas of acrobatic development:

Strength and Conditioning
Every class is loaded with full body functional exercises chosen to develop stronger backs, abdominal muscles, wrists, knees and ankles. Strength and conditioning are extremely important because we need power to perform many acrobatic moves. Also, your body needs to be prepared for when that trick you are trying doesn't go exactly as you planned. You need to know how to land safely and absorb the energy of the fall.

Flexibility Training
Many acrobatic skills are easier to perform when you are flexible. In this course, I will be sharing with you some of my favorite techniques for enhancing flexibility. This kind of training can help remove any restrictions to movement that may be keeping you from what you want to be able to do.

Skills
While this is primarily a conditioning and flexibility class, we will be covering the basic progressions of gymnastic stunts in this course. This will include rolls, cartwheels, walkovers, headstands and handstands. For those who are ready, I may be able to work with them on some more advanced skills like handsprings and flips. Whatever we do will have to comply with the safety concerns of the instructor and the ability of the individual student. Please don't ask me to teach you a handspring if you can't do a good handstand. Equally, don't expect to be able to flip if you are unable to jump really high. Always remember, mastery of the basics is the surest way to develop your body for more advanced skills. We will be working without the benefit of trampolines and foam pits so when the time comes to pull off that advanced trick on your own, the only thing waiting for you will be the ground and your ability to land safely.

In my years of studying martial arts and gymnastics, I have found that the methods integrated into this course have produced some of the strongest and most flexible athletes in the world. This class will challenge people of all levels of fitness. I encourage all participants to come to each class with an open mind, a willingness to push yourself and a desire to transcend your physical limitations.

It all begins April 14. Classes will be held at Studio X, located at 2839 SE Stark Street between the Bonfire and Goodfoot Lounge. Class times will be every Monday from 6-7pm. We will be covering a lot in the hour so please arrive early each day so that everyone will be ready to move by 6pm sharp. The fee is $90 per 6-week session. Pre-registration is required to attend. Call or email me by April 7 if you are interested in participating.
